Clary Sage

Salvia sclarea

In ancient times, clary sage was highly regarded by the Greeks and Romans for its euphoric and aphrodisiac properties while the Germans favored it for its ability to intensify the intoxicating effects of Muscatel wines. This tall, biennial herb grows in most parts of the world and provides a powerful aromatic, yet benevolent, euphoric oil.

The plant is widely used as a culinary herb in soups and stews. Its oil is used in the perfume industry. The uplifting and inspiring action of clary sage creates a sense of well-being useful for times of depression and nervous tension. It is useful as an aid in adjusting to change and helping put things into perspective. Clary sage has a strong, dry, and nutty aroma. It encourages creative thought, but because it can also cause sleepiness, it is best used for times of pleasure and relaxation. For this reason, clary sage should not be used before driving or any function requiring focused concentration. This essential oil is very useful for women who suffer from PMS or menopausal symptoms. Clary sage has a place in many body care products, especially for hair since it stimulates the scalp and for skin since it is a cell regenerator. Clary sage is grown in many countries and its oil is distilled from its flowering tops and leaves.

Clary sage is a most interesting essential oil. It has become an important part of many of blends and a favorite herb in the garden. The whorls of flowers are so perfect and beautiful that it seems perfect that they produce a unique essential oil.
