The texture, feel and density differ characteristically from one woman to the next, and there is a wide range of normal breast texture characteristics. The production of high levels of the hormone estrogen at the same time a lowered volume of the hormone progesterone after ovulation in some women, means that such women have greater chances of developing fibrocystic breast and are much more likely to have lumpy breast. Prolactin hormone production zooms up if this particular state of high estrogen and low progesterone production coincide in a woman. This has important effects in that, while prolactin is the mild secretion-inducing hormone in lactating mothers, it simply increases breast tenderness in women who are not otherwise breast-feeding a child and thus, this hormone is also linked to fibrocystic breast.
Substances such as caffeine have been suspected by researchers to have some stimulatory effect on the growth of lumps or the development of fluid filled breast cysts. This is because women who stopped using caffeine showed a reduction in the tenderness of the breast. However this is disputed by other experts who see no conclusive and substantial evidence between breast tenderness in women and the causative effects of caffeine with regard to this.
