Nausea And Vomiting

Nausea is a very uncomfortable felling which has been described as developing or “coming in the form of waves”; the feeling of nausea is a sudden overwhelming woozy sensation that takes over abruptly. Nauseous sensations are often accompanied by sudden chills and profuse sweating and even a sudden increase in the production of saliva in the mouth-the sensation is usually of short duration. Actual vomiting or what doctors call an emesis, commonly known as "throwing up" is sometimes the only way in which a sudden bout of nausea might end. During this process, there is sudden relaxation in the muscles of the stomach and due to this, all the normal rhythmic contractions which are there to propel food into the small intestine reverse their actions, and the result is the sudden rush of intestinal contents into the stomach-this sensation is very uncomfortable for the afflicted person. Now the stomach reacts and its contractions forcefully push the contents upward via the esophagus and into the mouth. Vomiting is very valuable as a natural reaction of the body in ridding itself of all accumulated toxic matter even though the sensation is not at all pleasant. The majority of people who get a nauseous sensation and vomit always feel much better later as the stomach empties itself.

Nausea can come about in a person as a result of ingesting some spoiled food such as foods that have become contaminated by bacteria or the presence of bacterial toxins, nausea is also apparent during the course of disorders and illnesses such as the flu, nauseous sensations can also be induced by the active chemicals found in some commonly used medications, often medications that are helpful in other ways, like the majority of chemotherapy medications used in the treatment of cancer will produce nauseous sensations in an individual, nausea and bouts of vomiting can also be induced in an individual by the consumption of large amounts of alcohol. Eating very rich foods and overindulging in food or inhaling strong and penetrating odors such as smoke, perfume and certain food odors may also in addition induce nauseous sensations, nausea is also triggered by the presence of stress and anxiety, and of course the main symptom felt during motion sickness is a deep and persistent nausea.

During nausea the nerves in the stomach are involved and become impaired or are stimulated for no reason, these then begin to send warning signals to the brain, even though the body is fully healthy-the body reacts to this signals and induces the peculiar sensations felt during nausea. To cite a good example, heightened hormone levels from all the hormones released suddenly during pregnancy can be seen as being beneficial to the person, however, symptoms such as morning sickness are still produced even by this sudden pike in the hormone levels-nausea is an inherent part of this whole sickness. Thus at least in women and in women undergoing PMS the increase in hormone levels can be directly attributed as the cause for nausea and vomiting.

Additional things you may do

For topical relief from nausea, place a cool cloth on the forehead and lie down when the attacks come. To take away the sensation and uncomfortable feeling make sure to focus only on your breathing-you will find nausea much more manageable this way. Nausea can be triggered by any long exposure to very strong or unpleasant odors, this includes exposure to things such as tobacco smoke and the acrid smell of solvents used in many cleaning supplies, even perfume may cause spells of nausea to develop. Drink as much water as possible to replace the fluids lost during vomiting but at the same time take care to avoid eating food for at least two hours following a bout of vomiting-eating food immediately after vomiting increases the likelihood of throwing it all up again. The best fluids to consume include fluids like water and fruit juices, these fluids must not be caffeinated beverages and they are best taken in small sips over the course of a day. Suck carefully on ice cubes if you vomit again as this will calm your stomach.

For kids

See age-appropriate dosages of herbal remedies

Children often complain of a burning sensation in the stomach when affected by nausea, this is normal during a stomachache accompanying the nausea and some aloe vera juice will aid in clearing and resolving the stomachache. The aloe vera juice must be a food-grade product and make sure to check when buying. Children can be given a single tablespoon of the diluted aloe vera juice, the juice can be mixed in six ounces of water, and this solution can be taken up to thrice every day as a direct internal treatment for nausea. This remedy must be used in small amounts or very sparingly with children as it is a known strong cathartic and may induce unwanted vomiting. Restless and sick children can be calmed down using doses of chamomile tea. The child can be given a single dose along with food or a dose in between meals at least two times everyday as long as the nauseous sensation persists. Children affected by bouts of nausea, sudden feelings of vomiting and a bad stomachache can benefit from using herbal supplements of ginger. Children can be given a single dose of the herbal ginger supplements whenever symptoms crop up. If the child feels that the herbal ginger tea tastes too strong, it can be mixed with some apple juice or it can combined in a herbal formula consisting of equal amounts of ginger and some licorice root-which will sweeten the taste of the mixture. As stomach upsets occur because of fluctuating acid levels, taking green clay will aid in the neutralization of the acidic stomach felt by the child. This herbal concoction can be prepared by mixing a single teaspoon of the clay in a cup of spring water and the mixture can be used as an herbal supplement. This mixture is disliked by the majority of children even though it is of great benefit and the herbal mixture can be ingested immediately after it has been prepared. The best way is to let the mixture stand overnight as this will allow all the clay within the mixture to settle down-the affected child can drink this mixture in the morning and doses can be repeated whenever the nausea returns. Children affected by an irritated stomach can also benefit from using either raw honey or some barley malt extract as a supplement. Children must be given half to a teaspoon of this herbal mixture about once every hour or so.
For your information: children who are not yet a year old must not be given honey to treat an irritated stomach. Honey has been linked to many cases of infant botulism, this is a potentially life-threatening type of food poisoning, quite common in occurrence and the risk of it occurring must not be taken. Instead, the root of the licorice herb which is soothing to the stomach, may be used with infants. Children suffering from an irritated stomach can be given a cup of the herbal licorice root tea, thrice every day as long as the symptoms persist.
Attention: children who suffer from a high blood pressure must not be given this herbal supplement. In addition, the herbal peppermint tea given to children will aid in effective and safe digestion especially on an irritated stomach. This herbal tea is especially beneficial for children who suffer from a stomachache or those having bouts of vomiting after eating a heavy meal. Children must be given a single dose of the tea, along with the meal or if preferred twice daily between meals. Stomachaches that come along with physical symptoms such as excessive production of gas, can be treated with a brew made from blending one part each of some anise seeds, some fennel, along with some peppermint, and thyme. Children can be given a single dose of this herbal mixture as and when necessary. An acidic or upset stomach can also be aided in settling down and soothed using an herbal Umeboshi plum paste. Children can be given one eights of a teaspoon dosage once about every thirty to sixty minutes during the treatment. This paste can be combined in an herbal formula with some ginger or some kuzu root infusions. Curing pills is a two thousand year-old traditional Chinese herbal formula, this Chinese medicine is still available today as a product in supermarket shelves, and it is very effective in dealing with any type of stomach disorder and may be used with children. The product label will contain the age-appropriate instructions on dosage and this must be strictly followed while using it to treat nausea and stomach troubles.
