Elm

Ulmus procera

Elm flowers appear before the leaves; small reddish brown clusters smother the branches. The mature tree with its familiar outline is 20-25 m high but it is often seen in hedges. There are many varieties of elm and care is needed with the identification, especially since the flowers alone do not make a proper distinction. Look out for wych elm (U. glabra) which is largely unaffected by disease. It is not the one to use, however. The English elm (U. procera) which Bach selected has a similar bark but the tree is taller; it forms suckers, and branches from the column of its trunk while wych elm is broader and fan-shaped. Wych elm has larger seeds and longer, pointed leaves which have a smooth stalk, while the new growth on English elm is hairy.

Flowering Period

Elm flowers appear in February or March, before the leaves. The trees do not flower profusely every year.

Preparation

Elm is prepared by the boiling method. Sections of the twig and flowers are cut so as to fit the saucepan; select from as many different trees as possible. Since the flowers are extremely numerous and are infertile in any case, you will not harm the future prospect of the tree.

Uses

Overwhelmed with responsibility.

People of the Elm type are often found in positions of responsibility. They are capable people, who do not lack confidence and are perfectly able and willing to deal with all sorts of situations. However, if they take on additional duties or are burdened with extra responsibility, such as might happen following promotion, they can suddenly become over-whelmed by the thought of what is expected of them. This is when they begin to lose their confidence, feel despondent and doubt their ability to cope; and this is when Elm is needed to restore confidence and positive thought and remind them of their capabilities.

Animals with Elm indications will be those who feel burdened by a sense of responsibility. This may include dogs, cats and horses who take part in shows and who may normally be quite confident creatures, but suddenly panic when about to enter the arena, and shy away and display other signs of distress. Rescue Remedy would be helpful for stage fright, but Elm should be an additional consideration, especially if this behavior occurs in normally reliable and steady animals.

Elm would also be useful for a mother who abandons her litter because she cannot face or cope with the expectations of her young. Guide dogs and hearing dogs may also need Elm from time to time. They are chosen for their capable, calm and dependable temperament, but there may be occasions, perhaps noticeable during training sessions, when they appear to lose their confidence and calm and when the responsibility which is placed upon them becomes a burden.
