Biochemic Tissue Salts For Dogs

Biochemic tissue salts, sometimes called Schüssler salts, are homeopathic remedies prepared from mineral rather than animal or vegetable sources. While they are prepared in the same way as homeopathic remedies, rather than using them according to the homeopathic philosophy of "like curing like", biochemic tissue salts are given to correct perceived mineral deficiencies.

The concept of using tissue salts to correct the body's mineral imbalances was developed in the 1870s by a German homeopathic physician, Dr Wilhelm Schüssler, who also created the terms "biochemics" and "tissue salts". He named 12 essential salts, and described the medical conditions that his remedies should be used to treat, either singly or in combination. Biochemic tissue salts were incorporated into the existing range of organically-derived homeopathic remedies.

Therapists believe that an imbalance or lack of specific salts causes a range of medical conditions from emotional upsets to allergies. They believe that a small "homeopathic" dose, where the minerals are diluted so that they are no longer measurable, is easily absorbed by the body, restores balances, and helps the body to heal itself.

Conventional medical research has shown that mineral salts are vital for good health, and conventional vets routinely measure mineral levels in the blood, especially those of sodium and potassium, to monitor a variety of illnesses. However, they feel there is no evidence that biochemic remedies, if diluted to homeopathic levels, will have any effect. Homeopathic vets will often prescribe biochemic tissue salts, along with nutritional advice, as treatment for minor illnesses.

Tissue salts are used singly or in combination to treat conditions that a homeopathic vet feels are associated with specific mineral deficiencies. Tablets are given more frequently for new clinical signs and less frequently but for longer durations for chronic conditions.
