Herbs gallery - Costmary

Costmary - perennial to 1m(3ft) with wide, grey-green, ovate, sweet-,smelling leaves that have serrated edges. The yellow, button-like flowers of costmary resemble those of tans and appear in loose clusters from late summer to early autumn.

Perfumed toilet water was once made from costmary leaves and they added a spicy flavor to ale. Costmary was known as bible-leaf because the early American settlers used the long leaves as bookmarks, reviving themselves with the pleasant scent.

HABITAT AND CULTIVATION

Costmary is native to southern Europe and western Asia. Naturalized and cultivated in North America and Europe.
