Urtica urens

Appropriately urticaria (nettle rash or hives) is a key condition treated by Urtica urens. It is given for red, burning, stinging skin eruptions that may be swollen or itchy. Symptoms are often aggravated by warmth, bathing, and vigorous exercise. Itching tends to be worse on rising in the morning, perhaps causing a fear of going to bed at night. Urtica urens is also used for actual burns or scalds with classic redness and blistering, and for blistering, burning, stinging, red, allergic rashes caused by insect bites, stings, shellfish, and plants.

In the 1st century CE the ancient Greek physician Dioscorides advocated this nettle and its relative, Urtica dioica, as a treatment for festering wounds, nosebleeds, and delayed menstruation. The plant has a long tradition of use for many ailments in Western herbalism, and is still highly valued today.

The whole flowering plant, including the root, is steeped in alcohol.

Uses

The historical utilization of the stinging nettles has been long and traditionally relevant for many herbalists. John Gerard was a prominent 16th-century herbalist who first used the herb as an antidote to beat back cases of poisoning and the juice of the nettle paradoxically is known to be an excellent antidote for the irritation of caused by the stinging hairs of the nettle. Herbalist have made extensive use of this rather common weed to treat a variety of disorders down the centuries, and the herbal remedies derived from the nettle have been used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, in the treatment of various stomach problems, in the treatment of diabetes, and to stanch nosebleeds. The herbal remedy is also used in the treatment of hives - or urticaria, the symptomatic rash of which resembles the nettle induced rash very closely.
The herbal remedies made from the nettle are also used extensively in the treatment of many other kinds of conditions, and the various herbal remedies are taken in the form of internal tonics or as topical applications in the form of externally applied herbal ointments, the main use of the remedies has been largely in the treatment of a variety of skin problems and disorders. The remedies made from the nettle are also excellent to treat burning urine inducing itching sensations, which may often be associated with disorders such as cystitis.
