Usage
To treat allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergies, such as
hay
fever); to prevent recurrence
of nasal polyps after they
have been removed surgically.
How it works
Respiratory corticosteroids
such as flunisolide primarily
reduce the allergic response
to inhaled allergens, and
inhibit the secretion of mucus
within the airways.
Side effects
- Serious
- No serious side effects are associated with the use of
flunisolide.
- Common
- Nosebleeds or bloody nasal secretions, nasal burning or
irritation, sore throat, aftertaste.
- Less common
- Change or loss of sense of smell or taste.
Possible interactions
- Other medicaments:
The following medicaments may increase the effects of flunisolide:
Flunisolide taken concurrently with:
- stanozolol (Winstrol) may result in increased risk of
acne or edema.
- some antiepileptic medicines such as phenytoin (Dilantin) may increase
risk of osteoporosis.
- inhalant bronchodilators-epinephrine, isoetharine, isoproterenol-may
offer improved results in asthma treatment.
- methylphenidate (Ritalin) may cause increased growth suppression.
- Foods:
- No specific restrictions beyond those advised by your physician.
- Herbal medicines or minerals:
- Fir or
pine needle oil should not be used by
asthmatics. Ephedra alone does carry a German Commission E monograph
indication for asthma treatment. If you are allergic to plants in the
Asteraceae family (aster, chrysanthemum, daisy or ragweed), you may also be
allergic to Echinacea,
chamomile,
feverfew and
St. John's wort. Increased
calcium and vitamin D are prudent while taking this medicine. Talk to your
doctor before adding any herbals to this medicine.
- Alcohol:
- No direct interactions expected, but excessive
alcohol use may be a
risk factor for osteoporosis. Since long-term use of this medicine may lead
to osteoporosis, excessive use of alcohol must be avoided.
- Tobacco smoking:
- No direct medicament interactions expected; however,
smoking can
worsen asthma and reduce benefits of flunisolide.
- Occurrence of unrelated illness:
- Acute infections, serious injuries or surgical
procedures can create an urgent need for cortisone-related medicaments given by
mouth and/or injection. Call your doctor immediately in the event of new
illness or injury.
- Discontinuation:
- If this medicament has made it possible to reduce or discontinue
cortisone like medicaments by mouth, do not stop this medicament abruptly. If you must stop
this medicament, call your doctor promptly. Cortisone preparations and other measures may be necessary.
- Special storage instructions:
- Store at room temperature. Avoid exposure to
temperatures above 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). Do not store or
use this inhaler near heat or open flame.
