Usage

To help control high blood pressure and to treat conditions that cause edema (swelling of body tissues resulting from excess salt and water retention).

How it works

Diuretics increase the excretion of salt and water in the urine. By reducing the overall fluid volume in the body, these medicaments reduce blood volume and so reduce pressure within the blood vessels.

Possible interactions

Other medicaments:

Indapamide may increase the effects of:

  • ACE inhibitors and cause severe lowering of blood pressure on standing (postural hypotension).
  • other antihypertensive medicaments; dose adjustments may be necessary to prevent excessive lowering of blood pressure.
  • lithium (Lithobid, others) and cause lithium toxicity.

Indapamide may decrease the effects of:

  • oral antidiabetic medicaments (sulfonylureas); dose adjustments may be needed for proper control of blood sugar.

Indapamide taken concurrently with:

  • digitalis preparations (digitoxin, digoxin) must be followed closely and adjustments made to prevent fluctuations of blood potassium levels and serious disturbances of heart rhythm.
  • NSAIDs may blunt the therapeutic benefit of indapamide.

The following medicaments may decrease the effects of indapamide:

  • cholestyramine (Cuemid, Questran)-may interfere with its absorption.
  • colestipol (Colestid)-may interfere with its absorption.
Foods:
Follow your doctor's advice about salt use.
Herbal medicines or minerals:
Ginseng may increase blood pressure, blunting the benefits of these medicines. Hawthorn, saw palmetto, ma huang, goldenseal, yohimbe and licorice may also increase blood pressure. Calcium and garlic may help lower blood pressure. Indian snakeroot has a German Commission E monograph indication for hypertension-talk to your doctor. Eleuthero root and ma huang should be avoided by people living with hypertension.
Alcohol:
Alcohol may exaggerate the blood-pressure-lowering effects of this medicament and cause orthostatic hypotension.
Exposure to heat:
Excessive perspiring could cause additional loss of salt and water.
Heavy exercise or exertion:
Isometric exercises can raise blood pressure significantly. Ask your physician for help.
Occurrence of unrelated illness:
Vomiting or diarrhea can produce a serious imbalance of important body chemistry. Consult your physician for guidance.
Discontinuation:
It may be advisable to discontinue this medicament 5 to 7 days before major surgery. Ask your physician, surgeon and/or anesthesiologist for guidance.
