Coronavirus

    Feb-10-2020

Contrary the common perception, coronavirus (also known as CoVid-19) comprises a big family of viruses that are responsible for a wide variety of ailments that range from common cold to severe diseases like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (also known as (SARS-Cov) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-Cov). However, a novel coronavirus or nCoV is a latest virus strain that is yet to be identified by scientists.

In fact, coronaviruses are zoonotic. In other words, these viruses can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. Comprehensive investigations revealed that while civet cats transmitted SARS-CoV to humans, dromedary camels transmitted MERS-CoV to humans. There are numerous coronaviruses that are currently prevalent among animals and humans are yet to be infected by them.

The signs of coronavirus infection are many and they include fever, respiratory symptoms, cough, breathing problems and shortness of breath. When the infection is critical, the patient may suffer from pneumonia, kidney failure, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and might eventually succumb to the infection.

There are a few standard recommendations, which if followed, could prevent the spread of coronavirus. These include washing the hands regularly, covering one's mouth as well as nose when coughing or sneezing and consuming eggs and meat only after cooking them thoroughly.

Moreover, it is suggested that one should avoid coming in close contact with any individual who has symptoms of respiratory ailments like coughing and sneezing.

It is worth mentioning here that scientists first discovered coronaviruses in 1960, but were unaware from where these viruses came. These viruses derived their name from their shape - which is crown-like. At times, but not frequently, a coronavirus may infect animals as well as humans.

N most cases, coronaviruses spread in the same manner in which other viruses that are responsible for causing cold. Coronaviruses can spread when infected people cough and sneeze without any protection, when a healthy person touches the hands or face of an infected person or when one touches things like doorknobs that were earlier touched by infected people.

It may seem incredible, but the fact is that nearly everyone is infected at least once by some coronavirus or the other during their lifetime - in most cases it is when they are in childhood. For instance, coronavirus infection is very common during the winter as well as fall. Having said this, a person can be infected by coronaviruses at any time of the year.

Common symptoms of coronavirus

The symptoms associated with coronavirus infection are comparable to any other infection of the upper respiratory tract - such as the cough, runny nose, and sore throat and occasionally fever. In most instances, an individual is not even aware whether he/she has been infected by coronavirus or any other virus - such as rhinovirus - that causes cold and cough.

In order to ascertain whether you have been infected by coronaviruses, you need to undergo laboratory tests for nose and throat cultures, besides taking blood tests. However, often these tests may not be required at all. Even the results of the tests would not help in changing the manner in which the symptoms are treated. Usually, the symptoms disappear within a few days.

However, if the coronavirus infection does not go away, but spreads to the lower respiratory tract like the lungs and wind pipe, it may result in pneumonia. This is particularly true in the case of older people, those suffering from heart diseases or individuals having feeble immune systems.

What to do about coronavirus?

As of now, no vaccine is available for treating coronavirus. So, to prevent getting infected by coronavirus, you must do the same things that are essential to prevent common cold. These include washing the hands carefully with soap and warm water at regular intervals. Alternatively, you may also use a hand sanitizer that is alcohol-based.

At the same time, be careful not to touch your mouth, eyes and nose with your hand. Also ensure that you do not come in contact with people who are already infected by coronavirus.

In you have already been infected by coronavirus, you need to do the same things that you would do if you were suffering from common cold and cough. It is important that you drink lots of fluids and taken enough rest.

At the same time, you should take medicines available over-the-counter (OTC) for treating your sore throat and fever. However, be careful not to give aspirin to children or young people below the age of 19. Instead, they could be given acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

If you get a coronavirus infection

If you are already suffering from cold and fever, whose symptoms are similar to those of coronavirus, you can do a few things to help other people from not being infected by the virus. Most importantly, you need to stay at home when you are sick. In addition, ensure that you don't come into contact with other healthy people, which might spread the infection.

When you cough or sneeze it is essential that you cover the mouth and nose with some cloth, a tissue paper or, preferably wear a protective mask. Having used the tissue or cloth, discard them in a trash can and wash your hands thoroughly with soap or an alcohol-based sanitizer. Also clean the surfaces you might have touched and disinfect them.

How coronavirus infections are diagnosed?

If you feel you have been infected by coronavirus, you need to check with a physician who will recommend you to undergo several laboratory tests, including cultures of the nose and blood test. In a number of instances, the healthcare provider may also ask for your travel history, as this may prove to be important in treating the symptoms.

Coronavirus infection treatment

As of now, no specific treatment is available for most people infected by coronavirus. In fact, most of the people who are infected by this virus generally get well on their own. A healthcare provider can only recommend the steps that you need to take to get relief from the symptoms associated with the infection.

If you are worried over your symptoms or have any doubt about your travel history, especially if you have recently traveled to a region where severe cases of coronavirus are prevalent, you need to consult your physician or a healthcare provider right away. You need to bear in mind that the earlier you start coronavirus treatment, the chances of getting well are better.

Respiratory infection caused by novel coronavirus

Diseases associate with the novel coronavirus (also called nCOV-2019) are akin to the different respiratory ailments and they comprise sore throat, dry cough, fever and headache. Nearly all the incidences of related to the new coronavirus are said to be mild to moderate with those infected critically experiencing difficulty in breathing and shortness of breath.

While two to three percent of those affected by this virus are reported to have succumbed to the disease in China, it is possible that the real risk of such critical outcomes is much lower considering the fact that the milder cases are unlikely to be detected.

Initially, the cases of infection by novel coronavirus were associated with humans being exposed to living animals at a market in China's Wuhan City where seafood is sold. However, the infections increased substantially owing to the transmission of the virus from one human to another.

It is known that different respiratory viruses usually spread by means of cough or sneeze and when a healthy person touches something that has earlier been touched by an infected person. These viruses also spread when one touches his/her mouth, eyes or nose. However, scientists are to fully comprehend the primary manner in which nCov-2019 has been spreading rapidly as well as the efficiency of the new virus.

In China, health authorities have already initiated various preventive as well as control initiatives to stop the virus from spreading. At the same time, they have also launched a massive investigation to detect the source of nCOV-2019.

There are no vaccines - the injections being used are genetic modifications and do not even protect from Covid-19
