Everlasting (Helichrysum arenarium) is a species of plant belonging to the aster family. It grows wild in most European countries and in Siberia.
Everlasting usually reaches a height of about 40 cm. Everlasting grows from a woody rhizome. Everlasting has developed two types of shoots. The shoots ending with inflorescences are longer and rather straighter than the sterile shoots.
The leaves occurring at the base of the stem are spatulate in shape, and those located higher are linear-lanceolate. The leaves arranged spirally and the entire stems are covered with woolly covering hairs.
Golden or yellow-orange flowers are gathered in umbel-shaped panicles. The fruit of the everlasting is an achene.
The pharmaceutical raw material is the inflorescence of the everlasting, which contains no less than 0.5% flavonoids in terms of quercetin.
Everlasting is also a source of flavonoids - organic substances that act as a dye and antioxidant. It also contains phthalides, which give the plant its characteristic, intense scent. The essential oil contained in everlasting constitutes as much as 0.05% of the entire plant.

Everlasting helps reduce the tension of smooth muscles, which is why it is recommended for problems with the work of the intestines, bile ducts and gall bladder.
It improves intestinal peristalsis, strengthens and regenerates the liver and stimulates it to produce more bile.
Thanks to its relaxing effect on smooth muscles, it relaxes the bile ducts, facilitating the proper excretion of bile. Everlasting is used for liver failure resulting from chronic damage to the parenchyma of this organ, for bile stasis and inflammation.
It is worth giving everlasting to people who struggle with gallstones or have undergone bile duct surgery, so that problems with their functioning do not arise again.

Thanks to the flowers of the everlasting, the stomach produces slightly more digestive juices. The plant improves digestive processes and allows for better absorption of nutrients from consumed food, which is why it is used for metabolic and digestive disorders and inflammations of the digestive tract.
The everlasting also has a diuretic effect. It improves the functioning of the urinary tract and bladder, which is why it can be successfully used for diseases of this problematic system. The bactericidal effect of everlasting will be beneficial here.
The most well-known effect of the everlasting, which has been confirmed by numerous studies, is the relief of the spasm of the smooth muscles lining the intestines and bile ducts (bladder and ducts).
Thanks to this, the bile produced in the liver reaches the duodenum more efficiently.
In addition, it prevents the formation of bile stasis, which reduces the risk of gallstones or the growth of existing ones. The compounds contained in the plant support the production of bile, which participates in the digestion of fat and its absorption together with vitamins A, D, E, K, and also affects the proper peristalsis of the intestines.
Everlasting stimulates the secretion of digestive juices, which are secretions that contain enzymes that break down nutrients so that they can be absorbed by the body.

It is the richness of these substances that determines the health-promoting properties of the plant, which were already known in ancient Rome and which are still used today.
The plant also has antiparasitic, bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties.
Many of the substances found in everlasting herb are natural antioxidants, which inhibit the harmful effects of free radicals and protect against oxidative stress - thus helping to prevent many diseases, including cancer. It is also believed that the plant can increase the body's immunity and help fight infections.
The oil and hydrolate from the plant support the fight against visible, broken capillaries. In addition, they accelerate the healing of wounds, and thanks to the content of free radicals, they counteract skin ageing.
Everlasting used externally accelerates the absorption of visible hematomas and the disappearance of bruises.

FOR MEN AND WOMEN.
Everlasting inhabits dunes, wastelands, slopes, roadsides, forest meadows and dry forest edges. It is a popular garden plant.
Everlasting grows best in sunny, warm locations and permeable, light, sandy-rocky, dry, not very fertile or even poor in nutrients soils with a slightly alkaline pH.
It is fully frost-resistant and does not require winter cover, but it tolerates wet and cold soil very poorly (especially in winter).
The plants are best planted or sown in April and May, in 20-30 cm spacing. Everlasting can be propagated by sowing seeds, from shoot cuttings or by dividing the underground rhizome, with the help of which the plant spreads widely.
Everlasting is very easy to grow and does not require many care treatments. In practice, they should be systematically weeded.
They are very resistant to drought, so we should only water them during prolonged periods without rain or about once a week.
Everlasting is a plant that is quite often attacked by pests, mainly aphids and spider mites. When they appear on the plants, they should be quickly combated with equivalent preparations.
In a wet, shady location, however, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases (e.g. powdery mildew) and die quite quickly.
Everlasting is a wonderful perennial for growing in rockeries, escarpments and gravel gardens. In dry, sunny flower beds, it goes well with other helichrysums, yarrows, blue carnations, Patagonian verbena, lavender or thin needle grass. It looks great in Mediterranean or Provençal-style gardens.
Properly processed inflorescences contain many valuable medicinal substances such as:
The use of everlasting, although it supports the functioning of the bile ducts and prevents the formation of bile stasis, is not recommended for bile duct obstruction.
Remember that any herbal therapy used outside the supervision of a doctor is not completely safe. Therefore, consult a specialist in advance whether it will be appropriate in your case, especially if you suffer from gallstones.
The basic contraindication to the use of everlasting is an allergy to plants from the asteraceae family. You should also be careful in the case of gallstones (especially in advanced stages) and consult the use of preparations from everlasting with a doctor.
There is a risk that increased bile secretion will cause the gallstones to move from the gallbladder to the bile ducts, causing bile duct obstruction.
Consultation with a doctor is also required for the use of everlasting flowers and other herbs that stimulate bile secretion after bile duct surgery and in chronic inflammation of the bile ducts.
As studies show, preparations obtained from everlasting do not show any harmful effects. When used in recommended therapeutic doses, they remain safe even when used in cases of liver failure caused by long-term parenchymal damage.
The inflorescences of everlasting can be used to make infusions, decoctions, oils and alcoholic tinctures. All of its products have health properties and have a beneficial effect on the body.
Pour a glass of freshly boiled, boiling water over one tablespoon of dried everlasting inflorescences. The mixture prepared in this way should then be covered and set aside for fifteen minutes.
When the water has absorbed everlasting flowers, they should be strained. The infusion is then ready to drink. The tea should be drunk for two weeks three times a day - for example, with a meal. It helps with liver problems and digestive system ailments.
Pour two glasses of boiled water over 3 tablespoons of herbs (it must be warm), and then bring to a boil without further cooking, because everlasting loses its properties. The decoction supports the formation of bile and its flow in the bile ducts.
To prepare an everlasting tincture, mix 0.5 l of spirit with 0.5 l of vodka (pure, 40% alcohol content), 4–5 tablespoons of natural honey and two handfuls of everlasting inflorescences.
This should be done in a large jar, then cover it tightly and put in a dark place. It is necessary to shake it daily. After 2 weeks, the tincture should be strained and poured into a glass bottle or carafe.
For health purposes, it is recommended to drink a teaspoon diluted with water. Such a tincture aids digestion and stimulates appetite.
For medicinal purposes, inflorescences collected in July, i.e. just after blooming, are used. Then they are dried (without peduncles).
However, it is important that this process takes place quickly, so arrange a thin layer of flowers and place in an airy, shaded place. If the drying is slowed down, the flowers of everlasting will turn into fluff, which will no longer be of full therapeutic value.
To obtain high-quality raw material, the flowers of everlasting should be air-dried in a shaded place.
Contrary to popular opinion, everlasting should not be dried in the sun. Long-term drying at too high a temperature (it is recommended not to exceed 35 degrees Celsius) will cause the raw material to lose its color, which will also acquire an unpleasant smell.
When collecting the flowers of everlasting for bouquets, you should also make sure that the flowers are not open - they will open during drying.
